Experience
Prior racing experience is prefered but is not necessary. We prefer that the person be a strong skier with a passion for going fast.
Eligibility
Any undergraduate or graduate student is able to compete. However each athlete is allowed only four years of eligibility.
Equipment
Skiers need to have their own skis, bindings, boots and clothing, although skis can be provided under special circumstances. The team provides helmets, shinguards and poleguards, GS suits, and other miscellaneous equipment. All tuning equipment and wax is provided by the team for the entire race season. There are mandatory ski lengths for men and women for each discipline. The women's ski lengths are 155cm for Slalom and 175cm for Giant Slalom. The men's ski lengths are 165cm for Slalom and 185cm for Giant Slalom.
Coaching
The head coach of both the Men's and Women's team is William Weidman, a USSA and USCSA certified coach and official, and he is assisted by Dave Berry. Both men are graduates of the University of Connecticut and former ski team members. Coach Weidman grew up on the slopes of Mount Snow, attending Mount Snow Academy (MSA). Upon graduation, he enrolled at UConn, and was a member of the Men's Ski Team during his undergrad career. After graduating, Weidman took over the reigns as head coach for both the men's and women's teams, and has been at the helm for the past six years. During the season, past team members may also help out the coaches, especially during the on snow training camp.
Training - Pre season
Individuals are expected to train and practice with the team during the week in the fall semester. We understand that people have very busy schedules and we have five practices a week of which members have to attend three. These practices consist of plyometrics, running, weight lifting, and other ski exercises.
Training - In season
Prior to winter break, the team will train on weekends (weather permitting) in the mountains of VT and NH. These weekends in late November and early December consist of free skiing and gate training for veterans. Lodging is taken care of by the team. The team trains for three weeks over winter break, traditionally at Mount Snow in West Dover, VT. There we spend one week practicing drills and technique before spending two weeks training in gates. Training is both where new racers are introduced to a racecourse and where experienced racers improve. During the 7 week training season we have train at Ski Sundown in New Hartford, CT two nights per week (free of charge to team members), and racers will get a chance to run SL and GS gates.
Races
The races are held mostly during the weekends after the first of the year. All of the races take place at mountains that are dedicated to putting on a quality event. A typical weekend involves the team driving up to the ski area Friday night prior to the race in school vans and SUVs. The team typically stays in hotels, or condos close to the mountain. Saturday we typically compete in the Slalom discipline, both men and women. Sunday is typically the day teams race GS. The women will have their first run in the morning, followed by the men, with second runs following in the afternoon.
Costs
Currently the only fixed cost that a racer has is the cost of the season pass in order to ski over winter break at training camp. This pass is typically $325 to $375. The team does not provide boots or poles, but can provide skis on a limited basis. However we do purchase equipment from a race specialty shop at discounted prices. All other costs such as those relating to lodging, transportation, and food during race weekends is provided by the school.
